On this tour we visit three of the key locations used in filming the hit television series Outlander. This series is based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon, and follows the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945 who is somehow swept back in time to 1743.

Falkland Town

In Outlander, the conservation village of Falkland is the place where Frank and Claire Randall come to in 1945 for a holiday.  It is from here that Claire is transported back to 1743 where she meets, and is forced to marry, the Highland warrior Jamie Fraser. Fans of Outlander may recognise the fountain in the town square as this is where Frank encounters Jamie’s ghost watching Claire.

Of course no visit to Falkland would be complete without a visit to Falkland Palace. This Renaissance palace sits in the middle of the Falkland conservation village and has many worthwhile features. You will quickly realise why it was a favourite place of Mary, Queen of Scots and was used as the country residence of the Stuart monarchs for 200 years. Consider a visit to its original and reconstructed rooms which are packed with 17th-century Flemish tapestries, elaborate painted ceilings and antique furnishings.  If you are a sports fan, take time to view the oldest real (or royal) tennis court in Britain, which was built for King James V.  And don't forget to leave time to stroll around the gardens which were designed by Percy Cane.

Doune Castle

Doune Castle, considered to be one of the best preserved medieval Castles in Scotland, and is the stand-in for Castle Leoch in Outlander.

This is a courtyard castle and a must see feature is the gatehouse which, at around 100 ft high, includes a hall and musicians’ gallery. Don’t forget to take in the views from the battlements that look out towards the Menteith Hills and Ben Lomond.

Monty Python fans will no doubt be aware that Doune Castle also featured in the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Blackness Castle

Our final stop on this tour is the dramatic fortress of Blackness Castle which is the stand-in for Fort William in Outlander.

The castle was built in the 15th century by one of Scotland's most powerful families, the Crichtons. In the 16th century it was strengthened when it became an artillery fortress.  This castle has also seen service as a royal castle, prison, and an armaments depot. However, it is often referred to as ‘the ship that never sailed’ due to its ship like appearance.
