Alnwick Castle

On this tour you will visit Alnwick Castle which is home to the Duke of Northumberland. The current duke and his family live in the castle, but only occupy a part of it. After Windsor Castle, it is the second largest inhabited castle in England.

The castle was first referred to in 1136 when it was captured by King David I of Scotland, but the first parts of the castle were erected around 1096.

With over 900 years of history to explore, and being one of the largest castles in the UK, this tour can’t be rushed.

Attractions include the castle grounds, museums and State Rooms. For a bit of fun you could participate in the Knight's or Dragon Quests. And when you are ready for something to eat you could try the Courtyard Café or the Stables Fryery, but don’t miss out the goodies on offer in the Butler's Pantry and Castle Gift Shop.

This tour lasts about 8 hours.

Many of you will know that the castle was used as a stand in for the exterior and interior of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter movies. Indeed, for many this is reason enough to visit Alnwick Castle.

Downton Abbey

Alnwick Castle has also featured in Downton Abbey where it doubled as the entrance to HMP York Prison and more recently as Brancaster Castle in Downton Abbey's 2014 Christmas special.

Visitors can explore the State Rooms, which were used during filming in July and August 2014.

Returning to Edinburgh

This tour is designed to maximise your time at Alnwick Castle, however, if time and tides permits, you can ask to visit Bamburgh Castle or Lindisfarne Castle (on Holy island) on your way back to Edinburgh.
