Sit back, relax, and let your chauffeur drive you in a luxury Mercedes Viano to visit some of the best locations in the Edinburgh area.
Your chauffeur driven vehicle will collect you from a location of your choice and then take you for a brief stop to the town of South Queensferry. The town of takes its name from the ferry crossing used by Saint Margaret of Scotland when she travelled between Dunfermline and Edinburgh Castle around 1070. Whilst in South Queensferry you will have the opportunity to take photographs of the world famous Forth Bridges. Near to the oldest bridge, the Forth Railway Bridge, stands the Hawes Inn. This was once used as hospital for the 160 plus workers injured while building on the Forth Rail Bridge. The inn was also the inspiration Robert Louis Stevenson’s book, Kidnapped, in which the hero of this book stays at this inn. The inn was also mentioned in Walter Scott’s novel, Antiquary.
Your next stop will be the dramatic fortress of Blackness Castle. The castle was built in the 15th century by one of Scotland's most powerful families, the Crichtons. In the 16th century it was strengthened when it became an artillery fortress. This castle has also seen service as a royal castle, prison, and an armaments depot. However, it is often referred to as ‘the ship that never sailed’ due to its ship like appearance. If you are a film buff you may interested to know that Blackness Castle was also used as a film location for Hamlet and the BBC production of Ivanhoe.
On leaving Blackness Castle sit back and relax as your chauffeur drive tour continues towards Linlithgow Palace. This palace was one of the principal residences of the monarchs of Scotland in the 15th and 16th centuries. Most of the Stewart kings lived at Linlithgow Palace and James V (1512) and Mary Queen of Scots (1542) were both born here. Although maintained after Scotland's monarchs left for England in 1603, the palace was little used, and was burned out in 1746. These magnificent ruins sit above Linlithgow Loch, within an expanse of parkland known as the peel.
Another option for this tour is a visit to Rosslyn Chapel. People visit this chapel to see the intricate carvings which cover practically every surface. Myths, legends and Hollywood fiction (in the guise of the Da Vinci Code) have given Rosslyn Chapel a unique sense of mystery and wonder. However, perhaps the most impressive things of all is that Rosslyn Chapel is still owned by the same family that founded it in 1446. You may not solve any mysteries during your visit, but if you look close enough you may just spot The Earl of Rosslyn.
And if you need some time away from castles, palaces and chapels, there is an option to visit the Glenkinchie Whisky Distillery for a tour and a wee dram. Glenkinchie is the nearest malt whisky distillery to Edinburgh, and produces the “Edinburgh Malt”. For those of you looking for facts and figure, this distillery has the largest stills in Scotland, with a volume of 30,963 litres.
