Sit back, relax, and let your chauffeur drive you in a luxury Mercedes Viano to some of the best Abbeys in an area known as the Scottish Borders. This area, covering around 1,800 square miles, sits south of Edinburgh & The Lothians and to the north east of Dumfries & Galloway. The Scottish Borders is an area of magnificent natural beauty and historical importance and has four remarkable abbeys, these are, Melrose Abbey, Dryburgh Abbey, Jedburgh Abbey and Kelso Abbey.
Melrose Abbey is probably the most famous Abbey ruin in Scotland. The abbey was founded in 1136 by David I and was largely destroyed in 1385 by Richard II's English army. You can visit the Chapter House at Melrose Abbey, where the heart of King Robert the Bruce is thought to be buried.
Dryburgh Abbey was first established in 1150 and is one of the most picturesque of all the Border Abbeys. You can explore the ruins of the Gothic architecture which sit in beautiful grounds beside the River Tweed. These ruins became the burial place of Sir Walter Scott in 1832. This tour also offers you the opportunity to visit Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott.
Jedburgh Abbey was founded around 1138. The church was built in the early Gothic and Romanesque styles and remains of the cloister buildings have been uncovered in recent years. The Abbey’s close location to the English border meant it was frequently targeted by invading border armies.
Kelso Abbey was built between 1128 and 1243, when it was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and St John. It was one of the largest and richest Abbeys in Scotland and is known to have had a superb library in medieval times. The abbey's wealth came from its lands, churches, schools, and farms. Despite the massive damage caused by sustained cannon fire from Henry VIII’s armies during the 1540s, the ruins of Kelso Abbey remains a superb example of Romanesque architecture.
Instead of visiting all of the Abbeys, this tour gives you the option of visiting any of the following locations:
